Your at home skin care routine is the most important part of taking care of your skin. Getting your skin treated by a professional regularly is important too, but if your not consistently doing your skin care routine at home you're not going to achieve your best results possible.
Cleansing is one of the most importat steps. Getting rid of all the dirt and oil that builds up on our faces throughout the day will help prevent acne and clogged pores. Always make sure to double cleanse especially if you wear makeup or have oily skin to make sure you thoroughly clean your pores. It's also important to make sure you're using a cleanser that's made for your skin type or else you could be doing more harm then good.
Toning is beneficial to all skin types. Toning your skin after cleansing brings your skin back to it's normal pH (between 4.5-5.5) and helps tighetn your pores to ensure no environmental impurities can penetrate back into your skin after cleansing.
Exfoliation is not an everyday step! If you have an oily or combination skin type you should only exfoliate 2-3 times a week and if you have dry skin, only 1-2 times a week. If your skin is sensitive using a gentle chemical exfoliant that dissolves the dead skin may be better for you than a physical exfoliant. Physcial exfoliants can tend to be a bit harsher because you're manually scrubbing the dead skin off.
Serum's are great for targeting your skin's specific issues. There are so many different types of serum's out there that offer so many benefits. Whether you're looking to hydrate your skin, brighten hyperpigmentation or prevent anti-aging, there's always a serum to help your problem.
Moisturizer is a must even if you have oily skin! Not applying moisturizer may actually be the reason your skin produces so much oil. When looking for a moisturizer look for one that is ideal for your skin type. You don't need a thick, heavy moisturizer unless your skin's extremely dry and you won't want a thin moisturizer unless you have oily skin.
Sun protection is an everyday step without question. Mid-winter or a cloudy day the sun is always shining UV rays that are very damaging to the skin. The suns UV rays are one of the biggest factors of aging. When UV rays penetrate into the skin they damage the elastic fibers that keep your skin firm and also can cause hyperpigmentation and no one wants that, so make sure you wear your SPF!
